Simone Fiorletta, le guitariste des italiens de Moonlight Comedy et guitariste solo a bien voulu répondre à mes questions. Je reviens avec lui sur l’histoire du groupe et la sortie de son nouvel album Dorothy paru le 23 février chez Lion Music Records.
Simone Fiorletta, the guitarist of the Italian band Moonlight Comedy and Solo guitarist with his own project Simone Fiorletta, has answered my questions. I talk with him of the band’s history and of his new release named Dorothy which came out on February 23rd on Lion Music Records. The original version is below the French version .
- Peux-tu s’il te plait te présenter ainsi que le groupe ?
Salut je suis Simone Fiorletta… guitariste solo et également guitariste de Moonlight Comedy, un groupe de prog métal.
Tout commença en Septembre 1998 quand nous nous rencontrâmes et tous les cinq décidâmes de composer notre musique. Donc pendant les quatre premières années on a produit deux démos et fait de nombreux shows. Après notre seconde démo, nous fûmes contactés par certains labels, alors on commença à composer un véritable album, The Life Inside qui est sorti en 2004 chez Lion Music, assurant ainsi une distribution dans 27 pays. Le 23 février dernier, c’était Dorothy qui sortait, toujours chez Lion Music, notre deuxième album déjà considéré comme un bon album.
J’ai aussi sorti deux albums solo, le premier The Beginning produit en Italie avec Videoradio Records, le second Parallel Worlds a lui été distribué à une échelle mondiale par Lion Music.
En Juillet 2007 sortira mon nouvel album, toujours chez Lion Music, My Secret Diary. Le line up pour cet album est composé d’Andrea De Paoli (Labyrinth) aux claviers, Pasko (Cans) à la basse et Tony Liotta (Santana, Sting et d’autres) à la batterie
– Vous jouez du métal progressif et vous êtes Italiens. Le power metal semble prendre une grande importance sur la scène italienne depuis le succès de Rhapsody. Y a-t-il toujours des personnes pour écouter du métal progressif ? Que penses-tu de cette scène power italienne ?
Oui, il y a des gens en Italie qui écoutent du metal progressif, mais en même temps il y en a aussi qui écoutent d’autres styles, Death, Black, et les formes de métal.
Personnellement, nous nous rappelons de la période où s’est passé le grand Boom de Labyrinth et Rhapsody et, ils ont aussi influencé notre manière de concevoir le métal. Mais en Italie c’est une étrange situation avec les groupes italiens et la presse. Je veux dire qu’en Italie c’est en fait difficile d’avoir des retours positifs que ce soit la presse nationale ou les métalleux. Parfois je ne comprends pas pourquoi !
Peux-tu nous expliquer les raisons pour lesquelles vous avez choisi de vous nommer Moonlight Comedy ?
Comment est né ce nom ? Avant de se sentir musiciens, on se sent acteurs, interprètes de ce que nous voulons communiquer avec notre musique; puis on aimait l’idée de comédie avec nous comme acteurs. Tout se passa un soir de pleine lune, ainsi le mix était fait.
- Quelles sont vos influences? Cela peut être divers types d’influences, pas seulement musicales…
On n’aime pas être comparé aux piliers du métal, parce que selon nous Dorothy a son propre style (quelques chroniqueurs nous ont dit qu’on était originaux et innovants) ; nos chansons sont une fusion de ce que nous aimons… du prog au power, du thrash au heavy. Peut-être sommes-nous un mix de Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Pain of Salvation… les grands groupes de prog et pourtant très différents les uns des autres.
Ce que nous proposons c’est en fait de projeter nos vies, nos émotions à travers notre musique…
- Comment procédez-vous pour composer votre musique?
La musique de Moonlight Comedy nait de ses cinq acteurs. Une chanson peut démarrer par un de mes riffs de guitare, ou sur un plan batterie ou une ligne mélodique ou vocale. Etc..Etc…
- Qui a fait la cover de ce nouvel album? Quel est le sens de cette cover et son lien avec le concept ?
Notre Acteur IV (Armando Pizzuti) est un bon bassiste mais il est aussi un bon graphiste et web-designer. Donc il s’est chargé de la cover et de toutes les illustrations.
Dorothy s’inspire du célèbre « Magicien d’Oz » ; en fait c’est une promenade à travers la vie qui a commencé il y a trois ans de ça.
Dorothy traite des questions classiques relatives à l’adolescence : « Que dois-je être ? » Sans guide, Dorothy supporte une double personnalité. Cachant ses vraies émotions de haine et de colère à l’égard de son entourage avec un masque grotesque de lapin, elle laisse s’épuiser son âme, elle est au bord de la folie. « I was wrong » (que l’on entend dans l’introduction) : c’est la clef pour comprendre ce personnage instable.
- Pour toi, quel est le meilleur concept album à ce jour dans le prog metal?
Il y a beaucoup de bons concepts-album dans le monde… et, « Scenes From A Memory » (Dream Theater » est un de ceux-ci.
- Peux-tu nous décrire le monde Dorothy, l’histoire complète?
On veut y décrire la période de l’adolescence et tous ses problèmes, les émotions, la haine, l’amour…
- Qu’est-ce que vous avez gagné avec Dorothy et qui n’était donc pas présent sur l’album précédent?
Il y a beaucoup de différences entre le premier album “The Life Inside” et “Dorothy”; tu peux voir ces différences dans l’approche que nous avons eue, la manière dont nous avons travaillé, les sonorités, dans la technique, dans toutes les dimensions qui permettent de créer une chanson. Il y a aussi les parties électroniques (totalement absentes du premier) et des changements dans notre image aussi. Avec Dorothy on présente une nouvelle part de Moonlight Comedy, dans un sens révolutionnaire. En fait pour connaître cette évolution tu as juste à écouter notre travail.
- Peux-tu me donner cinq mots résumant l'essence de votre musique?
Notre musique est le miroir de notre âme.
- Comment êtes-vous rentrés en contact avec Lion Music? Etes-vous satisfaits de leur travail ?
Après la sortie des deux démos, entre 99 et 2001, on a eu l’opportunité de faire écouter notre musique à Eric Lars Mattson, le boss de Lion Music. Donc il nous a donné la possibilité de sortir notre premier album « The Life Inside » qui est sorti fin 2004 et aujourd’hui nous sommes de retour avec Dorothy.
- Quel groupe vend le plus d’albums, Simone Fiorletta ou Moonlight Comedy?
C’est Moonlight Comedy. Les albums instrumentaux ont un public plus restreint que les groupes à chanteur.
- Qu’avez-vous prévu pour le futur?
On peut te dire qu’il y a deux tour-manager qui travaillent pour nous. En ce moment, nous avons quelques shows mais la plupart seront concentrés en Septembre-Octobre. En même temps, et dès que possible nous allons commencé à composer notre troisième album.

- Could you please introduce yourself and the band?
Hi there, I'm Simone Fiorletta...solo-guitarist and also the guitarist of Moonlight Comedy, Prog.Metal Band.
Everything begun in September 1998 when we met and all five decided to compose our music. So in the first four years we did two demo and many live shows. After our second demo we were called by some labels, so we began to compose a real album, "The Life Inside" was released in 2004 for 27 nations by Lion Music. The 23rd February, the same Lion Music has released Dorothy, the second album, already considered a good work.
I've also released two soloist cd, the first one "The Beginning", national distribution, with Videoradio records, the second one "Parallel Worlds", worldwide distribution, with Lion Music Records.
In July 2007 will be released my new album, by the same Lion Music, "My Secret Diary". The line-up of this album is: Andrea De Paoli (Labyrinth) on keyboards, Pasko (Cans) on bass and Tony Liotta (Santana, Sting and more) on drums.
- You play in progressive metal and you are Italians. The power metal seems to take a big importance on the italian scene since the success of Rhapsody. Are there still some people in Italia to listen progressive metal? What you think about this italian power metal scene?
Yes, there are people in Italia that listen Progressive metal, in the same time there are other that listen Death, Black and all Metal's shade.
Personally we remember the period where there was the boom of Labyrinth and Rhapsody and, they have also influenced our way to see and to conceive the metal. But in Italy there is a strange situation between Italian bands and press. I'm trying to say that in Italy it's very difficult to have good words from Italian press and also from metal people. Sometimes I can't understand why!
- Could explain us the reasons why you take the name of Moonlight Comedy?
How was born this name? Before feeling musicians, we feel actors, interpreters of what we want to communicate with the music; then we liked the comedy idea and we, the actors. Everything happened in a full-moon night, so the mix was made.
- What are the main influences of the band? It could be different types of influences, not only musical influences…
We don't like to be compared to some metal pillars, because according to us Dorothy has its style (some reviewer has told we are original and even innovative); our songs are a fusion of what we love… from Prog to Power, from thrash to heavy. Maybe we are a mix among Dream Theater, Symphony X, Fates Warning, Vanden Plas, Pain Of Salvation… big prog bands but very different among them.
Our purpose is to set to music our lifes, our emotions...
- How do you proceed to compose your music?
Moonlight Comedy's music born from all five the actors. A song can start from a my guitar riff, or from a drum's pattern, or from a melodic line of vocal etc. etc.
- Who has done the cover of this new album? What is the meaning of the cover and his link to the concept?
Our Actor IV (Armando Pizzuti) is a great bass player but he's a great graphic and web-design, too. So, He's done the cover and all the artwork.
Dorothy is inspired to the famous "Wizard of Oz"; anyway it's a walk inside the life started three years ago.
Dorothy is about the classical teen-ager question: "What I must be?". Whitout a guide Dorothy assumes a double personality.
Hiding her true emotions of hate and anger toward who surrounds her with a grotesque rabbit mask, she let to wear out the soul, she is on the the edge of madness. "I was wrong": this is the key to understand his unstable personality.
- For you, what is the best concept album ever made in the progressive metal?
There're many many good concept album in the world...and, "Scenes From A Memory" (Dream Theater) is one of this!!!
- Could you describe us the world of Dorothy, the complete story?
We want to describe the adolescence period with all problems, emotions, hate, love...
- What things you think you gained with Dorothy that you do not have with your previous release?
There are many differences between the debut album "The Life Inside" and "Dorothy", the new; you can see these differences in the approach that we have had in the layout of the work, in the sonorities, in the technique, in the whole way to conceive every song, in the electronic parts (totally absent in our debut) and in our image too. With Dorothy we introduce some new Moonlight Comedy, in a revolutionary way.

- Give me five words to summarize the essence of your music?
Our music is the mirror of the our and your soul.
- How do you get in touch with Lion Music? Are you satisfied of their work?
After the release of two demo-cd between '99 / 2001, we have hade the opportunity to make listen our music to Eric Lars Mattsson, the Lion Music boss. So he give us the opportunity to release our first full-length, "The Life Inside" released in 2004 end...and now we're came back with "Dorothy".
- Which “band” sells more albums Simone Fiorletta or Moonlight Comedy?
Moonlight Comedy's albums. Instrumental albums have a smaller public than band with a singer...
- What have you planned for the future?
We can say you that there are two tour manager who are working for us. In this period we have some live show anyway we think to concentrate all in September and October. At the same time, as soon as we'll start to compose our third album.
