Dead End Finland nous a sorti en 2016 un excellent album, dont la chronique se trouve ici (9/10). Le groupe s’est prêté au jeu des questions réponses.
Peux tu nous présenter le groupe?
Dead End Finland est un groupe composé de 4 personnes venant d’Helsinki, la capitale de la Finlande. Il est composé de :
- Mikko Virtanen au chant
- Santtu Rosen à la guitare et la basse.
- Miska Rajasuo à la batterie
- Jarno Hänninen au clavier
Comment tout cela a t-il commencé ?
Tout a commencé en 2007, quand Santtu (guitare et basse) en a eu assez de son groupe qu’il avait à l’époque, il voulait en créer un nouveau avec une idée précise en tête. Il voulait faire du métal moderne mélodique avec des growls et du chant clair, du clavier et une batterie qui claque. Miska (batterie) qui jouait aussi dans ce groupe, partageait son idée de groupe et ils ont tous deux quitté le groupe. C’est comme ça que tout a démarré. La direction musicale du groupe a vraiment été amorcée quand Mikko (chant) et Jarno (clavier) ont été invités à rejoindre le groupe.
Pourquoi Dead End Finland (ou Dead End) comme nom de groupe ? Il y a t-il une signification derrière tout ça ?
Le nom officiel est en fait Dead End Finland. Dead End (voix sans-issue) est ce que la situation représentait avec cet ancien groupe avant que l’on commence le nouveau. Le Finland a été ajouté après pour se démarquer des autres groupes avec comme nom Dead End, vu qu’on se doutait qu’il allait y en avoir un paquet. On a même découvert qu’il existait un groupe très populaire au Japon nommé Dead End en fait. Comme tout le monde le sait, la Finlande est le leader mondial de groupes de métal par habitants. 53,2 groupes de métal pour 100 000 habitants pour être précis, c’est pour ça qu’on met en évidence notre pays dans le nom du groupe. Nous avons remarqué que notre logo trouble les gens à cause des lions, populaires sur les armoiries en Finlande. Partout ailleurs, c’est Dead End Finland.
Quelles sont les influences principales du groupe ? Comment définirais-tu le genre musical du groupe, si varié et riche ?
Nous avons des goûts musicaux très éclectiques et nos influences diffèrent d’un membre à l’autre du groupe. Les lister tous ici nous prendrait des lustres. On va du Sash ! des années 90 à Sepultura et plein de choses entre ces deux repères. Nous utilisons le terme métal mélodique mais plein de médias disent qu’on a inventé un genre à nous et ça nous rend très fier. Si vous devez nous comparer à un genre similaire, prenez Soilwork, Pain, In Flames et Amon Amarth et ça vous donnera une idée de la direction musicale, peut être aussi Nightwish pour l’aspect orchestral et grandiloquent.
Slave To The Greed
Peux-tu nous expliquer tout le processus de conception de l’album, depuis l’écriture jusqu’à la sortie finale dans les bacs.
On a notre façon d’enregistrer nos albums depuis le début. Les trois albums ont été enregistrés de la même façon, seulement deux chansons par session. C’est la seule façon qu’on a trouvé de travailler en studio. Nos chansons ont des centaines de pistes audios et ça prend beaucoup de temps et d’effort pour que ça sonne exactement de la façon que l’on veut. Si nous devions nous concentrer sur plus de 2 chansons à la fois, çe serait impossible de se focaliser dessus avec une précision à 110% et nous voulons vraiment que nos chansons aient le meilleur son possible, sans compromis.
Que représente la pochette de l’album ?
Notre chanteur, Mikko, est aussi designer graphique, il est donc naturel pour lui de créer les designs liés à Dead End Finland. On peut voir son travail dans beaucoup d’autre albums, par exemple Moonsorrow (Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa), Ghoul Patrol (Ghoul Patrol, The Undying), ErilaZ, (Black God of the Hunt), The Undivine (Face The Chaos), Grendel (A Change through Destruction, Corrupt to the Core) et ainsi de suite. Nous pensons que la pochette de Slaves to the Greed est une marque de notre temps. Maintenant on peut se dire que le personnage est en train de faire un selfie mais il y a 10 ans, on aurait dit qu’il tenait un livre, notre perspective change avec le temps. L’artwork est supposé te donner une impression sinistre. Une atmosphère mystérieuse mais aussi intemporelle.
Quels sont les thèmes abordés dans l’album?
Les paroles concernent la haine, la soif de pouvoir, l’antagonisme, la guerre, la destruction et leur impact dans nos vies. L’état instable du monde pour résumer. Certaines chansons sont générales et d’autres sont plus spécifiques à des événements actuels. Par exemple « Nightfall » est à propos des événements tragiques de novembre 2015 au Bataclan, à Paris. Nous voulions honorer les victimes et leurs familles mais aussi repenser à quel point ces événements peuvent affecter n’importe qui, n’importe où.
L’album ne fait que 42 minutes de long mais, avec cette qualité, on aurait aimé en avoir plus, était-ce un choix de nous frustrer ainsi?
Hahhaha! Merci. Nous avons essayé de faire des chansons aussi bonnes que possibles et nous avons exclu tout ce dont nous n’étions pas à 100% satisfait. Même si l’album ne fait que 42 minutes, il est très profond et je pense que tu peux trouver des nouvelles nuances à chaque fois que tu l’écoutes.
Un mois après la sortie, êtes vous satisfait des retours à propos de Slaves to the Greed?
Carrément! Après avoir autant travaillé dessus pendant 2 ans, tu as tellement le nez dans le guidon que tu finis par ne plus voir le produit dans sa totalité et c’est dur de prédire la réaction du public. C’était rassurant de voir que le public et les médias aimaient l’album, malgré qu’on ai décidé de partir dans une nouvelle direction. La première chronique nous a donné un 10/10, ça a brisé la glace instantanément.

Chanter en finnois, ça ne vous intéresserait pas? Sur une piste bonus peut être?
On a appris un truc, ne dis pas « Fontaine je ne boirai pas de ton eau » et sur cet album, on a un peu de finnois. Sur la piste « The Devil Inside Me » on a un speech par Jukka Pihlajaniemi (Paara, Church of the Dead, ex-Ghoul Patrol, ex-De Lirium’s Order, ex-The Undivine)
Quels sont vos projets pour les prochains mois?
On va commencer à écrire du nouveau matériel et, pour votre plaisir, on peut déjà annoncer que la première piste du 4ème album est déjà finie, elle attend juste d’être enregistrée.
Le streaming prend une place de plus en plus importante dans l’industrie musicale, quelle est ton opinion à ce sujet?
Bien sûr que c’est dommage que la vente des disques chute et la compensation pour le streaming légal soit minimale et ne refléte pas les dépenses réelles dans le milieu de la musique. Le bon côté est qu’on peut toucher une plus grande audience et tout le monde peut écouter nos albums à travers le monde. Nous sommes tellement conservateurs, on veut que nos albums sortent aussi de manière physique.
Des concerts de prévu?
Non, pas vraiment. Nous verrons si il y aura vraiment un concert de Dead End Finland. Si le bon moment arrive. Peut être, peut être pas. On va pas se forcer à faire un concert si il n’y a aucune demande du public, on a fait assez de concerts avec nos précédents groupes.
Pour quel groupe voudriez vous ouvrir?
Et bien, si jamais nous faisions des concerts, ça serait probablement pour ouvrir et tourner un groupe Finlandais qui nous est familier, sans avoir de tête d’affiche.

General questionsCan you introduce the band to us ?Dead End Finland is a four-piece band from Helsinki, the capital of Finland, to be exact. Vocals – Mikko Virtanen Guitars, bass – Santtu Rosén Drums – Miska Rajasuo Keys – Jarno HänninenHow did it all started ?It all started in 2007, when Santtu (guitars and bass) got sick of his old band and wanted to start a new one with a clear vision in his mind. The point was to make modern melodic metal with death metal grunts and clean vocals mixed with keyboards and clockwork sharp drumming. Miska (Drums) who also played in the old band, shared his vision and they both parted ways with this group. That was the starting point and the true destination begun to form after Mikko (vocals) and Jarno (keys) were asked to join the band.Why Dead End Finland (or Dead End) as a band name ? Is there a meaning to it ?The official name really is Dead End Finland. The « Dead End » represents the state that we were in with the old group before we started a new one. The « Finland » part was added to the name for us to stand out from the other Dead End groups around the world since it was likely there were others. Found out there was a quite popular Dead End in Japan years earlier. And as we know, Finland is known to be the world leader in terms of metal bands per capita, with 53.2 metal bands per 100,000 people. This is why we gladly higlight the fact in our name. We’ve noticed that our logo confuses people ’cause the lions, that are familiar from Finland’s coat of arms, represent the word « finland » and it is not really written in it. Everywhere else the spelling is « Dead End Finland ».What are the main influences for the band ? How to define the band’s genre, which is so varied and rich ?We have a really wide taste in music and our influences are really different with each other. It would take ages to list them here, so lets say we go from the early 90’s Sash! to Sepultura and a lot from between. We ourselves only use the term melodic metal, but many medias say we’ve created a style of our own and we are really proud about that. If you must compare us to something a bit similar, maybe Soilwork, Pain, In Flames and Amon Amarth might give you a hint of the line. Why not also Nightwish, referring to the orchestral and bombastic parts.Slave To The Greed Can you explain the whole process in conceiving the album ? (From the writing to the release)We’ve had our own style to record since the beginning. All three albums have been recorded in studio with two songs at a time. This has been the only functional way to work for us. Most of our songs feature hundreds of tracks/channels and it takes a lot of time and effort to make everything sound the way we want. If we would need to concentrate on more than two songs at a time, we believe it would be impossible to focus on them with 110 % precision. We want every song to sound as good as possible without compromise.What does the artwork represent ?Our vocalist Mikko is also a graphic designer, so it’s natural for him to design all the graphics related to Dead End Finland. You can see his work also in many other albums such as Moonsorrow (Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa), Ghoul Patrol (Ghoul Patrol, The Undying), ErilaZ (Black God Of The Hunt), The Undivine (Face The Chaos), Grendel (A Change Through Destruction, Corrupt To The Core) etc… We think the cover of Slaves to the Greed has succeeded in being a picture of the times. Now you might think the character is taking a selfie, but ten years ago you would’ve seen him holding a book. Your perspective changes in time. The cover is supposed to give you a sinister tone. Modern, yet ageless and mysterious athmosphere.What are the themes talked about in the album ?The lyrics cover themes like hate, greed for power, antagonism, war and destruction and the way they reflect in our lives. The unstable state of the world. Some songs more widely, some specifically about some actual events. For example « Nightfall » is about the tragic events on November 2015 in the Bataclan theatre, Paris. We wanted to honor the victims and their families and also to take a moment to think about the fact how these horrible things can affect anyone anywhere out of the blue.The album is « only » 42 minutes long, with its quality, we would have liked a bit more of it, was that a choice to frustrate us ?Hahhaha! Thank you. We tried to make the songs as good as possible, so we cut out everything we were not 100 % satisfied with. Even though the album is 42 minutes long, it’s a mile deep. We believe you can find new nuances after multiple times you listen to it.One month after the release, are you happy about the feedback about Slaves To The Greed ?We truly are. After working with it intesively for two years, you are so close to the process, that you become a bit deaf to the big picture and it’s hard to predict the reception of the audience. It was relieving to notice that the fans and media liked it though we took things into new directions. The first review was 10 out of 10 and it broke the ice straight away.Miscanelous Singing in finnish, it doesn’t interest you ? Maybe for a bonus song ?We learned one thing: Never say never, and on this album we actually have some finnish. On the song called « The Devil Inside Me » we have a speak by Jukka Pihlajaniemi (Paara, Church Of The Dead, ex-Ghoul Patrol, ex-De Lirium’s Order, ex-The Undivine).What are your plans for the next months ?We’ll be writing new stuff and for your delight we can inform you, that the first song for the 4th album has already been composed and it’s waiting to be recorded.Streaming is taking an ever growing place in the musical industry, what is your opinion about it ?Ofcourse it’s a pity that the record sales are decreasing all the time and the compensations from legal streaming are minimal and do not correlate to the expenses of recording music. But the brightside is obviously the fact that we can reach greater amount of audience and everybody can listen to our albums around the world. We are so conservative, that we want our albums to be released also on physical forms.Do you have any concert planned ?No we don’t. We will see if there will ever be a Dead End Finland concert. If the right moment comes, maybe, maybe not. We’re not going to push ourselves out there without the demand from the audience. We’ve seen enough gigs with our previous projects…Which band would you like to open ?Well, if we would play live shows we would most preferably like to have a tour with some familiar finnish bands we know, without an actual headliner.Special Heavylaw question, One day you find a magical lamp with a genius inside who grants you 3 wishes, which ones would it be ?A peaceful evening to play videogames, a bag of pick ‘n’ mix candy and a cold beer!Thanks for your answers
